Overview
TotalAV is a UK-based antivirus company, offering their popular TotalAV antivirus software package in various tiers, including a limited free option. For the purposes of our TotalAV review, however, we’re going to be looking at the three primary paid (premium) tiers of antivirus, which offer the full TotalAV feature set and provide the top level of protection for their customers. We’ll review TotalAV in areas such as compatibility, performance against major threats, features, resource usage of the software, real-time scanning, and other ancillary metrics, including customer support and privacy. Our TotalAV antivirus review will allow consumers to decide if TotalAV is the ideal choice to meet their needs.
Compatibility
TotalAV offers compatibility with Windows and MacOS computers, as well as both iOS and Android smartphone and tablet devices. The interface and appearance obviously differ between these different platforms. However, the TotalAV features that are available are largely consistent, with the biggest difference being between the desktop/laptop Windows and MacOS versions as compared to the smartphone iOS and Android versions, which just makes sense given the different file system structures and uses of smartphones/tablets vs. full-fledged computer systems.
Spyware, Malware, and Ransomware Scans
In terms of spyware, malware, and ransomware protection, TotalAV operates in both active (on-demand) and passive (background scanning) modes. It monitors connections and code execution that could be harmful and takes a step to prevent you from accidentally allowing malicious programs, code snippets, or downloads to be executed. As we’ll discuss in a later section of our TotalAV review, the background scanning mode does not chew up a lot of resources the way some anti-malware and antivirus programs do.
Email Scans & Download Protection
Total Av Free Antivirus
All email attachments, downloads, and other files are scanned by the TotalAV software at the time they are downloaded or accessed. Anything suspicious is flagged, quarantined, and/or eliminated. This doesn’t help to stop you from getting bogus emails – it’s not an email filter program – but it will help to keep you safe, even if you were to wander onto bogus, phishing-style sites as a result of a bogus email. The main vector for viruses and malware through email and downloads are through infected files, after all, and in that respect, TotalAV receives high marks for its features and functionality.
Resource Usage of TotalAV
Next in our TotalAV review is a topic that’s not so much a feature of the software, but a common user concern: resource usage. There are several major antivirus and anti-malware programs out there that, despite their popularity and the backing of major brand names in security, tend to hog up a ton of system resources. Some programs do this in passive, background scan mode, which they really shouldn’t.
TotalAV, fortunately, doesn’t fall into this category. If anything, it can help your resource utilization, as there are several tools to improve boot time and manage background processes included. In terms of active scanning, all active scans can slow down systems while in progress, and TotalAV doesn’t seem to do this anymore or less than most other major packages on the market.
Real-Time Scanning
Is Total Av A Scam
Real-time scanning, also known as background scanning, is the passive protection used by most antivirus and anti-malware software. In reviewing TotalAV, we have to make an important distinction here. The free version (which we’re not reviewing) doesn’t have real-time scanning functions and only works as an on-demand scanner.
All versions of the premium TotalAV package come complete with the real-time scanning functions, as is typical of most security suites. Real-time scanning monitors all files that are actively being opened, modified, or dealt with – both user files and system files. This helps to catch, flag, and quarantine anything malicious the second it hits your system before it has a chance to wreak havoc.
Privacy Policy
One key point of our TotalAV review that is worth mentioning is that the privacy policy and other consumer protections are first rate. As a UK-based company, they take privacy and data protection very seriously. They fully conform to the recently-enacted GDPR, and clearly spell out how they obtain, retain, and use data from customers. There should be no worries here, as they’re consistent with other top companies in their commitment to user privacy.
Customer Support
Another area of our TotalAV review that many people often don’t consider when selecting a product is customer support. Often, people overlook this aspect of software and online services – that is, until they have a need for it.
So it’s useful, as part of any review of TotalAV or any other antivirus, to highlight what support and customer service options are available. In addition to an online knowledge base of self-service options, TotalAV offers email, a 24/7 live text chat, and 24/7 toll-free phone support is several major global countries, including the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia. It’s worth noting that the phone support option is only designed to handle billing-related issues, not technical ones. For that, you should use the email or live chat options.
TotalAV Plans & Pricing
As we mentioned earlier in our review of TotalAV, there are three tiers of plans or pricing within their premium antivirus product offering. These are Essential, Pro, and Ultimate, in that order. Essential provides a single license, for $19.95 for the first year, after which it renews at $99.95. Pro provides 3 licenses, as well as an antivirus ebook and safe password vault features, for $39.95 for the first year, after which it renews at $119.95. Finally, Ultimate provides 5 licenses, as well as top-tier support prioritization and a smartphone optimizer and protection suite, for $59.95 for the first year, after which it renews at $149.95.
Bottom Line - TotalAV Review
The bottom line of our TotalAV review is that it’s definitely worth checking out. For new subscribers, the first year prices are highly competitive and fall well below the cost of most other premium antivirus and security products on the market. TotalAV has all the common features of similar programs and works fairly well in most respects.
